December 23, 2020
1945-2020 ~ On Dec. 23, 2020, Gerard died suddenly at home with a glass of wine, food and a good friend at his side.
Gerard arrived in Canada from Holland in 1973 and after a short stay in Vancouver with his brother Dirk, he came to Ucluelet and began work with Millstream Timber. Eventually he worked his way from choker man to welder.
After lay-offs he worked for Sanders and Sons. Culture shock set in but the kindness and generosity of numerous Ucluelet families (you know who you are - far too many to list), he quickly adapted and became to love the town. His passion was fishing and Gerard and the "North Sea" were regulars at the docks. He also perfected the smoking of his catch.
Many thanks to the Ambulance Service, Fire Dept. and RCMP for your professionalism and compassion at a difficult time.
Gerard is survived by his brother Dirk (Nanaimo), sisters, Hanny (Portugal), Loes (Holland), Mary (South Africa), Astrid (Holland) and 10 nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother Hugo.
Once COVID is over his ashes will be spread at his favourite fishing hole.
In memory donations may be made to Thornton Creek Fish Hatchery or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
