January 11, 1934 - August 8, 2021
It is with heavy hearts we said goodbye to our mom, Georgie Munroe. She passed away peacefully with her daughters Juanita and Yolande at her bedside holding her hands on August 8th, 2021 at Mountain View.
Mom was born and raised in her family's home in the small town of Storthoaks, Saskatchewan. After boarding school she joined the Canadian Air Force as a fighter control operator. During this time she met the love of her life Eric Munroe and were married for 49 years. Mom was in the air force for 3 years until she decided to have a family. They raised 5 beautiful children. Dad was away on courses, and for long periods of time, she was on her own raising the first 3 children. Talk about having your hands full with no family around for support!
By1971, mom and dad had 2 more children. They travelled across Canada in 1973 from Ottawa to Courtenay in their car with the 5 children and a dog to boot! It was here they built their life together for the next 34 years.
After dad retired in 1981, he settled into a relaxing retirement, consisting of odd jobs to pass the time. Mom on the other hand worked at the Free Press (The Green Sheet) for a number of years at the front desk and then later on in the back. Once she retired, they built a house, travelled to Hawaii, New Zealand, Mexico, USA, throughout Canada, did lots of camping, and visits with family and friends. Mom often talked of those days, which always brought a smile to her face.
Georgie was predeceased by her husband Eric, sister Anita, brother Lionel and grandson Jesse. She is survived by her children, Francis (Cheryl), Yolande (Steve), Michael (Brenda), Juanita (Steve) and Craig (Lori). As well as her grandchildren Brandon, Savannah, Dana, Alisha, Chelsea, Jeremy, Claire, Elliot, and her great grandchild Alexander.
Mom, we know it was not easy for you and dad raising us 5 children, but we are very thankful for everything you taught us and did for us. We learned the value of hard work, to believe in ourselves, be kind to others and to always lend a helping hand.
Thank you to the Care aides, notably, Stu, Cindy, James and Collin. The LPNs, particularly May, Fiona and Denise. We so appreciated the tender care and love you gave her. Over the last month, we saw how much she meant to you as part of your extended family, and how much she will be missed. Thank you for sharing your stories with us.
Thank you to the hospice volunteers and Emily for your precious time you gave to her and her daughters so they could have a little time to look after themselves.
Special thanks to Brian for your check-ins with mom and Juanita. Your work is very special and our time with you was very comforting.
Mom is finally at peace with the love of her life by her side once again and we could not ask for anything more.
In memory of our mother we hope you treat yourself to a DQ chocolate soft served ice cream cone! This was mom's favourite treat.
Enjoy each day, and those dear to you, don't rush your time, as it is these moments you will be most thankful for. You will remember these moments and treasure them.
Mom you are forever loved and in our hearts.
A Catholic service will be held at Christ The King Church on September 1, 2021 at 11am, a social gathering in the lower level to follow.
