He leaves behind sister Julie MacMillan (Graham) their children Mathew, Suzie, Colin, and Alex, George's daughter, Amanda and her children Harriet Reesor (Andrew), and Elijah Weeks, and George's daughter Georgie Weeks Heyd (Brad Heyd) and their daughter Casey Heyd. He also leaves behind his stepdaughters Lloy Wylie (Gabe Haythornthwaite) their children, Sofia and Cecilia, and Skye Wylie (Chris Isocki) and their children Erich, Autumn, and Forest, and many close nieces, nephews, and sisters in-law.
George grew up in logging camps on Vancouver Island primarily in Camp 6 (Caycuse), with lots of family close by. Both his father and grandfather worked as locomotive engineers started George's fascination with engines.
He came to live in Duncan at age 9, and soon met life long friends Mike Hodding and his family and Mike's little sister Sharon (Judy) Hodding,(George's) future wife and also met (Kit) Darl Carson and Stan Popplestone. George's beloved little sister Julie, came along when George was 15 years old. After highschool he worked as boom man in Honeymoon Bay and Kelsey Bay.
He married Judy in 1957 and had two daughters, Amanda and Georgie. George worked as a steam engineer from 1957to 1965 at the Crofton Mill, and was also in the Scottish Reserves as a Drummer.
By 1964, George bought the first of 6 boats and so began a mystical life along the coast, which he knew like no other. His various careers included; BC Fisheries Dept., Camp Watchman, census taking, extra parts in movies, and TV show Beachcomber's and covered the coast from Haida Gwaii, Rivers Inlet, Ocean Falls to Cowichan Bay where he settled in 1980's with his favourite people.
Although semi retired, George could be found working odd jobs, taking people on cruises out to the Gulf Islands. He helped restore a ship the Eldoy, took it through the Panama and then it was sailed to Norway in 2008. He managed the engines till Newfoundland but had to jump ship as the seas were just too rough for a retired sailor.
In 2013, George witnessed his own effect on people when his own boat, the Fisherboy 2 sank in Cowichan Bay estuary. The outpouring of love and support was overwhelming. Jamie South and Irwin Killam hosted the "Keep George Afloat" Fundraiser and enough was raised to purchase his last boat, the Sea Gypsy 2. For this his family will be eternally grateful.
A local icon and character know for his wit, knowledge and storytelling, George will be deeply missed by his family, his Cowichan Bay community, and many friends.
George's humour, knowledge and friendships were legendary as was his love and zest for life, which he lived on his own terms, right to the end.
Special thanks to all his Cowichan Bay family, especially Don and Tuula, Janna, and Jamie, just to name a few and of course Kit (Darl) Carson, and also Chris and Irwin Killam for hosting his celebration of life in their pub.
Please bring your stories to share about George to the gathering at his favourite watering hole, The BayPub. Refreshments and a toast will be held on Sunday, August 18th 2 - 4 pm to honour George's life.

Hark, now hear the sailors' cry
Smell the sea and feel the sky
Let your soul and spirit fly
Into the mystic.
