May 23, 1950 - July 13, 2020
Born in Welland, ON - Deceased in Nanaimo, BC.
It is with heavy hearts we have to share the sad news of George's (Big "G") passing. His doctor in 1980 said to him if you don't lose weight, quit drinking beer and smoking, you won't last a year. A lover of music, beer, bacon and eggs.
George is survived by his twin sister Georgina McPherson of Clinton, Ontario; sister Margaret Wilson of Lewiston, New York; brothers James "Buddy" Singer and wife Jessie of Stoney Creek, Ontario; Doug Singer and wife Jane Lindstrom of Lantzville, BC; three of his closest friends Captain Yvon Turgeon, Harry Mashford and Ken "Little K" Brault, as well as many acquaintances from coast to coast.
George headed west from Ontario in the mid 70's and lived in Edmonton for a few years before making Vancouver Island his home. His first stop was Zeballos then Youbou and finally Nanaimo in 1990.
He always loved all types of music and had an impressive 900 album collection. Big "G" had an unbelievable memory and instantaneous recall by knowing each artist, band member's names, and song history in great detail. He decided to take his passion to the next level and share his talents with Malaspina College Campus Radio station.
On October 5, 2001, CHLY 101.7 broadcasted live with Big "G" being the show host with his deep, deep voice narrating and playing reggae, alternative rock, hip hop, folk, blues, roots music and an eclectic mix of performers for live interviews. He produced many podcasts at his home that are still listened to by many followers.
Big "G" was altruistic and deserved a lot of credit for his unpaid self-motivated work. Despite his health issues, he would make his own way to the station 30 hours per week for years. He was instrumental in many music festivals on the island and was well respected by all.
Many thanks to Dr. Janssen, the Nanaimo Affordable Housing Society and all the staff of the Buttertubs Place facility.
A Celebration of Life date to be determined after the COVID-19 safety issues are no longer a threat. Memories and condolences can be shared with the family at www.firstmemorialnanaimo.com
