December 25, 1970 - September 22, 2019
It is with great sadness that the Grieg Seafood family announces the passing of our dear friend and colleague Frode Mathisen, who died suddenly on September 22, 2019 at the age of 48. Frode was born on December 25, 1970 in the small city of Hamar in Norway. He received his Master's degree in Marine Biology from the University of Bergen in 1995 and started his career in salmon farming in 1997, working for Grieg Seafood in Rogaland from 1998 to 2002.
In 2007, Frode became the Director of Freshwater for Grieg Seafood in Bergen, but was eventually transferred to the British Columbia office in 2016 with his wife Linda to assist with the freshwater hatchery in Gold River, and to develop a new state-of-the-art hatchery in Campbell River. Vancouver Island soon became Frode's home. Although he was now based on the west coast of Canada, as a global leader in Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) technology, Frode travelled all over the world to share his vast, respected knowledge at international conferences and forums.
Frode's loss is a great one, not only for Linda and the Grieg family, but for the community of Campbell River, the country of Norway, and the global aquaculture industry. He will be remembered for his sense of humour, his kindness and his selfless encouragement in the workplace, always putting his team before himself. He will be greatly missed by us all.
Frode leaves behind his beloved wife Linda and stepson Robert. A private service was held at the Campbell River Community Centre on October 2, 2019. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Campbell River Hospital Foundation.
