April 15, 1940 - September 18, 2019
It is with sadness we announce the passing of Fred Ursel, beloved partner, father, brother, and friend. Predeceased by his parents: Fredrick and Phyllis Ursel, brothers: Keith Ursel and Howard Adams. Survived by his loving partner Geni Irlam, children; Carl, Mark, Rhonda, and Shannon, sister; Shirley Taylor, grandchildren; Danielle Burrows, Jordon Harris, Ryan Ursel, Ashley Cleugh, Luke McKinnon, Blake Ursel, and Brandon Russell, Former wife and mother of his children Corinne Ursel, sisters-in-law; Shirley Adams and Linda Ursel, and many nieces and nephews.
Born in Winnipeg, Fred moved to the Alberni Valley, with his parents, at the age of six. He began work in the forest industry at a young age, working for M&B at Franklin river, Cameron lake, and Sproat lake divisions. He spent some time as a longshoreman and commercial fisherman. Fred obtained his captains license and captained such vessels as the "Nicolina", and later the "Nidelvin". He continued his oceanic career by obtaining his marine pilot's licence, navigating the "Riley" throughout the Alberni inlet. His vast knowledge of the West coast and marine experience made him an invaluable member of the Alberni Rescue Squad. Fred, as a lover of fresh seafood and appreciator of good food (and a good cook himself), founded the Clam Bucket restaurant in 1996.
A tremendous love of the out doors, hunting, and fishing, provided Fred with the many colourful stories he shared with his family and friends. His passionate expressions of opinion, and sense of humour added to his larger than life persona. Fred lived life on his own terms; some would say he danced to the beat of his own drum.
The family would like to acknowledge the special relationship Fred shared with Bruce, Mona, Ian, and Norma, who's visits meant so much. Thank you to Alberni Valley Home Support, particularly Colleen, for assisting Geni in caring for Fred and helping to fulfill his wish to spend his final days in the only home he had ever known. Thank you to Dr. Lund for providing exceptional, personalized care, and who's appropriate humour was greatly appreciated.
A celebration of Fred's life will be held at 1 pm, Sunday, November 3, 2019 at the Green Port Hotel. BuckSnorts restaurant and Creeker's pub will be combined for the occasion. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Alberni Valley Rescue Squad.
