After a mercifully brief struggle with cancer, Fred succumbed on September 18, 2018 at Cowichan District Hospital. Thanks to the nurse who worked hard that night to keep Fred as pain-free as possible.
Fred was born and raised in Toronto and joined the RCAF as part of a ground crew checker, repairing airplanes on their return for activity over Germany.
On his return to Toronto, he soon married Flora Clements. In Ontario Fred leaves his daughters Kathryn Mainguy (Ray) and Susan Mott (Ken). (Daughter Martha deceased.) He also leaves six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren in Ontario.
After the death of his wife Flora, he married his old friend Edith Meyers and moved to Duncan BC in 1996. In Duncan, left to grieve are Edith, step-children Judy Hudson (Reid), on Salt Spring Island, Andrew Meyers (Sushiela), and in Ontario Janet Whittam (John), as well as six step-grandchildren in BC, Ontario and Nova Scotia and 10 step-grandchildren.
Fred will be hugely missed by Edith and all his family and will be remembered by many friends, old and new, near and far, for his sense of humor, his snappy dressing, his wonderful meals and blackberry jam.
Memorial service will be held at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church on Saturday September 29, 2018 at 2 pm.
