In Loving Memory ~
Fred passed away peacefully on October 10th. Predeceased by his daughter Katherine and brother Donald. His loving wife of 71 years , Yvonna, died peacefully a few days later. He will be missed by his son Kenton (Susanne), brother Leonard (Bud), sister Theresa (Terry Harrison), and grandsons Nick and Alex.
Born in Victoria in 1925, Fred became well known locally for his athletic ability, especially as quarterback in football for which he received scholarships. He attended St. Louis College, Vancouver College, Portland University, and the University of BC. Fred earned a teaching degree and started his career at Oak Bay High.
Fred and Yvonna met in Victoria during his college days and married in 1951. Getting the travel bug in the early 60's they applied and were accepted into the External Aid program with the Canadian government and moved with their two children, Katherine and Kenton, to teach in Ghana, Africa for two years and then on to Jamaica for three years. On return Fred and Yvonna settled with their children on a 13-acre farm in Cobble Hill where Fred taught at George Bonner Junior Secondary School until his retirement. In preparation for Fred's retirement, they started raising purebred Suffolk sheep and one of their yearlings called Long Tall Sally brought fame to Canada for winning the best in the world at the World Congress. During this time Yvonna served as president of the Canadian Sheep Breeders association. In later years Fred's interests led to researching the family history. Yvonna enjoyed painting in watercolor and playing bridge. They both loved curling, travelling and being part of a Dragonboat team. Most of all they cherished being with their family especially their grandsons.
We would like to extend our thanks to all those at Luther Court who took such great care of mom and dad.
A family gathering at their graveside will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers a donation to Parkinson Society BC https://www.parkinson.bc.ca/donate/memorial-gifts/ would be appreciated.
