Francis Joseph ‘Frank’ Hastings

September 4, 1939 – November 8, 2021
Surrounded by his family, Frank passed away peacefully on November 8, 2021, after living with the debilitating effects of pulmonary fibrosis for the past six years. Frank was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Annie, and his brother Robert. He is survived by Carol, his wife of 52 years, daughter Krista (Marc), son Gavin (Candy) and his grandchildren Alexa, Caden and Alex.
Frank was born in Cumberland on September 4, 1939 and was raised in Union Bay and Fanny Bay. After graduating from Courtenay High School and then UBC, he worked in Ontario for a short time before joining MacMillan Bloedel. During his 34 years with MB his work took him across Canada, the USA and the UK, but he spent more than half of his career working for the company at various Port Alberni operations.
In 1969 Frank married the love of his life Carol. They enjoyed an amazing life together, filled with many great friendships and wonderful travel adventures. When they weren’t away travelling you could find them on the golf course or on the ski hill, depending on the season. Frank also enjoyed fishing and boating, particularly the trips spent with Jack, Buck and cousins Shane, Don, John and Mike. More recently, Frank enjoyed getting together to play cards with his golf buddies.
Frank’s favourite times were spent with family, and he was so proud of his children and grandchildren. Throughout his life he spent many seasons coaching his children’s softball, baseball and basketball teams, and later coaching his granddaughter’s softball teams. His grandchildren fondly remember the many things he taught them including how to ski, golf, play crib – the list is endless. He never missed a piano recital, dance show, hockey or ball game.
Frank was a great friend to many, and he always appreciated these friendships, some of which were life-long. Many of his friends will remember Frank’s love of music, as he played the piano or the accordion every chance he got. It wasn’t a good party until the accordion came out!
Frank was a true gentleman. His infectious smile, positive outlook and larger-than-life personality endured him to everyone he met. While his passing leaves a void in the lives of many, Frank enjoyed a rich life filled with family, friends, laughter and great times. He has left us all with great memories and we are fortunate to have had his wisdom, guidance, love and support. He will be deeply missed.
Frank’s family wishes to thank Drs. Johnsen, Marsay and Lund and the Home Care Nursing staff for their assistance during his illness. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice. At Frank’s request there will be no service. Obituary
