March 26, 1924 - November 19, 2020
Emmanuel Joseph (Ed) McCready of Nanaimo, BC, was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Ingeborg McCready; his four children; Andy McCready, Catherine McCready, Ruth MacNabb and Shelley Beaudet; eight grandchildren and four great grandsons. When asked what he was most happy about in his lifetime, his regular reply was "my marriage to Inge".
After military training in Eastern Canada he served in the Canadian Army in London, England during WWII. Here he met his first wife, brought her home to Winnipeg and started a family.
With experience in an accounting firm, Ed went into practice on his own. A School Board Trustee from 1955 to 1958, he went on to teach Business Education subjects for 22 years in the Winnipeg School Division.
In September 1970 he married Ingeborg Herfert, the love of his life. After retiring in 1979 he took up commercial beekeeping. Ed was always keenly aware of economic and social affairs and actively community-minded. He was a founding member of both the Manitoba Friends of Schizophrenics Ltd. and the Grace Housing Cooperative Ltd.
In 1987 they moved to Vancouver Island. Continuing to give back to community, he was a founding member and Vice-President of the Nanaimo Friends of Schizophrenics Housing Society. After underwriting the purchase of an apartment block, he contributed significantly there for 12 years. Many schizophrenics now have a stable home because of Ed.
He will be dearly missed.
