January 29, 1938 - December 4, 2020
It is with heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Elsie Fletcher on December 4, 2020, with her family by her side.
Mom was born on January 29, 1938 in Ottawa, Ontario, the third of seven children of Guy and Edith Cuthbert.
The family moved to the Sunshine Coast of BC when she was a teenager and opened a seaside restaurant. It was while working there that mom met Alfred, the love of her life. They married soon after and settled in Gibsons, BC.
Dad was a commercial fisherman and mom and dad shared many adventures fishing on the coastal waters before starting a family. Their daughter, Judy was born in 1961, followed by a son, Peter in 1963. Another daughter, Jeanette, was born in 1965 and the youngest, Philip in 1966. In 1967 they moved their family to Nanaimo so dad could begin his new career working on the fisheries research vessel, the G.B. Reed.
Mom was very creative and had many hobbies, including sewing, knitting, ceramics, cake decorating and gardening. She was also very outgoing, and made friends wherever she went. She had a huge heart, and loved welcoming people to her home.
Over the years she knit hundreds of children's sweaters to donate knowing she was helping to keep a child warm in the winter.
After dad retired, they spent many days in their motorhome exploring. They also enjoyed cruising, seeing much of the world traveling this way.
Elsie is predeceased by the love of her life, Alfred. She is survived by her children Judy (Bruce), Peter, Jeanette (Nick), and Philip (Marlene), as well as her grandchildren Corey (Kelsey), Carla, Candice, Brandon and Chantal, and three great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staff and residents of Berwick on the Lake for making moms last few years so enjoyable, and the staff in the Brio Unit for looking after her so well in her last days.
There will be no service due to COVID.
Thoughts and wishes may be given to the family on the First Memorial Services website www.firstmemorialnanaimo.com
