September 26, 1920 - February 28, 2021
Our family is deeply saddened by the passing of our special "Omi" on Feb. 28th at the San Penn Palliative Care Unit. Elli had suffered a fracture to her spine after a fall on Feb. 22nd and was dealing with a lot of pain. Pain management became a priority and the family wants to thank both Dr. Andrew Kwasnica and Dr. Chris Dowler as well as the wonderful Palliative Care nursing staff for making Elli's last days as comfortable as possible.
Elli leaves behind her loving daughter Ingrid and son-in-law Bob with whom she shared a home in Sidney. She also leaves her cherished grandson (Scott) and granddaughter (Lysa) and adored great grandchildren Kenzie and Logan as well as a much-loved extended family (Heather & Sean, Lori, Michael, Maren & Myla and Bill & Marnie) and close friends Wendy & Brad, Donna & Art, Hazel & Heather, Annet & Dion, Myrtle & Patricia and so many more.
Elli along with her husband, Paul, and their daughter, Ingrid, had traveled from Germany to Australia before finally settling in Winnipeg in 1957. They eventually moved to Toronto and later Ottawa. When Paul, Elli's husband of 63 years, passed away in 2003, Elli joined Ingrid & Bob at their winter home in Sidney. The three of them stayed in Sidney only during the winter months (Dec-April) every year until 2015 when Sidney became their permanent residence.
During all these years Elli made countless friends while participating in various groups at the Shoal Centre - chair fit exercise, craft and knitting groups, lunch and coffee groups as well as the infamous weekly Skipbo card group with Hazel, Betty and Eleanor. All who knew her loved Elli. She was kind and generous, always ready to listen and never judgemental.
Elli is well known amongst her family and friends for always having a chocolate bar to give away to anyone who did something nice for her be it someone at the bank, grocery store or medical office. She also knit scarves for her friends and gave away many handmade kitchen towels as little gifts to any of Bob & Ingrid's friends who came to visit. She charmed them all and they adored her.
Last September Elli celebrated her 100th Birthday. Because of Covid, her big party at the Shoal Centre had to be postponed. Instead she had 6 smaller patio parties with High Tea being served by Ingrid at 3 separate patio tables to a few socially distanced friends at a time.
Elli made the most of every minute even during Covid times. She walked outside, loved talking with her family and friends by phone and via ZOOM, reading her magazines, watching Judge Judy every day on TV and playing Skipbo, Bingo and Tile Rummy with Ingrid & Bob several evenings a week. Elli will always be remembered as the personification of love and compassion. To know her was to love her. She will be greatly missed by all of us.
The restrictions of Covid have forced us to hold a small private funeral ceremony. However, once those restrictions are lifted, Elli's family will be hosting a Celebration of Life at the Sidney Shoal Centre.
