October 2, 2021
1928-2021 ~ Muriel Young of Comox, BC, formerly of Yellowknife NT, passed away peacefully October 2, 2021 at The Ocean Views in Comox with family by her side. Muriel was in her own home up until the last four months.
Muriel arrived in Yellowknife from her homeland of Scotland and married Andy Young who also came over from Scotland to work at Giant Mine. They raised their four children in Yellowknife. Since Andy was such an outdoorsman, Muriel went along with it and there were many camping, boating and fishing trips all together as a family.
Once Andy built the family cabin at Cameron River, that was it, Muriel said "no more tenting". As much as she was a fan of the midnight sun, she was not a fan of the black flies and mosquitoes.
Muriel worked for St. Patrick High School as their Secretary for several years and then moved on to work in the office for the YWCA.
Many long lasting friendships were made in Yellowknife, but Muriel and Andy decided it was time to retire and move south. They bought a home in Comox, BC and moved to a wonderful neighborhood where they made more long lasting friendships.
Muriel was part of a group of six ladies from that neighborhood that would get together once a week for coffee for years to come, rain or shine. However, Muriel decided she wasn't ready for retirement yet, she went to College to learn computer skills and then was hired by North Island College to work in their office.
Once she finally decided it was time to retire, she took up golfing, but decided she liked bowling better. She joined a walking group and then became an avid walker with one of her very close friends for years.
Muriel made her last move to a condo at Ocean Pointe and again made more friendships with some wonderful neighbours. She loved to visit with family and friends, knit, read and watch her favourite TV shows.
Muriel will be missed by her family and friends for her witty, kind, caring and gentle nature. She was the glue of the family, her unconditional love for her children and grandchildren reciprocated through 4 generations. We will carry her in our hearts forever.
Muriel was predeceased by her husband Andy Young, brother Bill Allan, son Bill Young, daughter-in-law Laurie-Ann Young and son-in-law Rick Burry.
She is survived by daughter Ann Hall (Tom), son Alan Young, daughter Moira Borschneck (Ralph), daughter-in-law Amy Chu, sister-in-law Jan Allan, 8 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and 1 niece and 2 nephews.
The family would like to thank the VIHA home care staff, the private caregivers and The Ocean Views for their excellent care of Muriel. We also wish to thank Dr. Marnie Grant and Dr. Bonnie Bagdon for always being there for Muriel.
Muriel requested no service, however, her ashes will be spread in the Spring when our family can all gather together again.
Rest In Peace our beautiful Mother.
