t is with heavy hearts that after a 25 year battle with multiple cancers and the most valiant, courageous fight, Dad is now at rest. He is survived by daughters Barbara (Dick de Goede), and Joan (Ed Knowler), their Mother, Gail Beck and granddaughters Jordan Knowler and Lauren de Goede. Dad was predeceased by his parents Gil and Edna and brothers Bill and Bob.
Dad was born in Duncan and spent his first 7 years in Youbou. The family then moved to Jingle Pot Road in Nanaimo to a small farm. He enjoyed farm life, excelled in school sports, was a voracious reader who had thirst for knowledge.
Dad attended University of British Columbia where he played varsity football and rugby. Dad worked very hard to put himself through university. A proud moment was when he was asked to try out for the BC Lions in the early 1960's. He received his Bachelor of Education and later received a Master's in Education (counselling) and a Master's in Education (leadership).
Dad taught in Trail, Ladysmith and Campbell River. While at Robron Secondary in Campbell River as Vice-Principal, Dad affectionately became known as "The Judge", a nickname he enjoyed!
Upon his retirement Dad moved back to his hometown of Nanaimo. He particularly loved tending his backyard garden and watching the many birds that came to his feeders. The many ducks that swam in his creek each year gave him great joy as well. These activities sustained him through his battle with cancer. Even in his last days, he insisted on watering his plants.
Dad enjoyed the outdoors camping in his beloved Westfalia, the 1970's version as well as later the 1990's version, which took him on two epic road trips to Mexico which were very much a life experience highlight. Dad also enjoyed canoeing in the Hawkline Monster, fishing and many road trips on his Honda Goldwing motorcycle.
He had an artistic side which he expressed through carving, drawing, watercolour painting and photography. Dad enjoyed family time on camping, hiking and canoeing adventures.
He was particularly proud of both his Granddaughter's accomplishments. He enjoyed talking with them about their university classes and assignments. Dad was proud of the direction their lives are taking them.
We would like to thank Leslie Evans for driving Dad to countless medical appointments, doing errands and checking on him daily over the past 8 months. Sister-in-law, Eileen Beck for knowing when and how to be there for him. You are an angel. At NRGH, Dr. Marback, the 3rd and 6th floor nursing staff and hospitalists for their compassionate care, the Palliative Care Unit for their kindness at a very difficult time.
The Home care nurses and care aides for their kind and compassionate care which enabling Dad to be at home for the last 8 months.
A family service will be held at a later date.
