In Loving Memory ~

Dr. Sorin Safirescu Rhone, a distinguished member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, passed away peacefully at the age of 100.

Born in Romania in 1923, Dr. Rhone's life was marked by his dedication to medicine, a love for classical music, languages, and mathematics, and a deep faith in God.

Dr. Rhone pursued his medical studies in Italy, where he laid the foundation for a remarkable and lengthy career in healthcare. After emigrating to the United States, he served honourably as a physician in the U.S. Air Force (Capt. Medical Corp.)

Following his service, Dr. Rhone moved to Canada, where he made significant contributions to the communities in Vancouver and Victoria.

Fluent in many languages, Dr. Rhone was "Il Dottore" to many Italian immigrants, as well as the community at large. His commitment to his patients and his profession earned him great respect and admiration from colleagues and patients alike.

Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Rhone was a man of many passions. An accomplished violinist, he found joy in playing classical music and was known for his extensive knowledge and appreciation of the arts. His deep religious faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding his actions and interactions with others.

Dr. Rhone was also a voracious reader, always eager to expand his understanding of the world. He cherished time spent with his large family and many friends, creating lasting memories full of love and laughter. He loved to cook for company and was the quintessential host of many dinners filled with storytelling, music, good food and wine, and friendship.

He was hospitable, engaging, and welcoming to all whom he met. Dr. Sorin Rhone's legacy is one of compassion, intellect, and unwavering dedication to both his profession and his loved ones. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

His last years were made more comfortable, and he was well prepared for his death, especially by the wonderful and selfless ministry of the priests of the Society of St. Pius X, and the care of the dedicated staff at Sunridge Place in Duncan. To those priests and caregivers, we will be forever grateful.

Sorin is survived by his many children, his grandchildren to whom he was affectionately known as their beloved Tatabun, and his great-grandsons, Sorin and little Virgil. He will be forever loved, and never forgotten.

His was a life of service, and he was selfless to a fault. A doctor, a violinist, a world traveler, a polyglot, a man of faith, a storyteller and raconteur par excellence; but mostly, a dad.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am on July 12, 2024, at Our Lady of Good Counsel, 4334 Jingle Pot Road, Nanaimo, BC.
