God's Garden
God looked around his garden
And he found an empty place.
He then looked down upon his Earth,
And saw your tired face.
He put his arms around you and
Lifted you to rest.
God's garden must be beautiful,
He always takes the best.
He knew that you were suffering,
He knew you were in pain.
He knew that you would never
Get well on earth again.
He saw the road was getting rough,
And the hills were hard to climb,
So he closed your weary eyelids,
And whispered "Peace be thine."
It broke our hearts to lose you
But you didn't go alone
For part of us went with you,
The day God called you home.
Dr. E.T. Henning (Terry) passed away peacefully on Friday, May 20, 2022 surrounded by family. Terry was born in Regina, Saskatchewan on October 16, 1938 to Elwood and Mary Henning.
Terry was a lifelong learner who graduated High School from Luther College, Regina, Saskatchewan in 1956. He completed his Bachelor of Arts in 1960 and his Doctorate of Medicine in 1964 at the University of Saskatchewan. Terry practiced family medicine in Humboldt, Saskatchewan from 1965 to 1999. During this time he was a dedicated family physician who acted as Coroner for the Province of Saskatchewan, Chief of Staff at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, President of the Humboldt Medical Clinic, Associate Clinical Professor in Family Medicine with the University of Saskatchewan and a member of both the Canadian Medical Association Quality of Care Committee and the Canadian Council Health Service Accreditation Board.
He had a passion for mentoring medical students and he thoroughly enjoyed his time working with them. Terry believed in being of service to the community. During his time in Humboldt he was as a member of the Westminister United Church, Humboldt Recreation Board, Chairman of the Board of Stewards, Founder and Head coach of the Humboldt Legion Swim Team and Coach of the Humboldt Bronco Junior Hockey Club. "Doc" was a gifted coach who fostered hard work, dedication and respect.
Terry was recognized for his passion, talent and commitment when he was honorably inducted into the Humboldt and District Sports Hall of Fame in 1992 and the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League Hall of Fame in 2010. Following his years in Humboldt, Terry took on a new role as Medical Director of two Health Regions in Alberta. Terry retired in Nanaimo, BC where his green thumb, together with his passion and outstanding talent as a gardener, brought him hours of enjoyment. Terry blessed many with his time and character through his volunteer efforts at The Meeting Place, Loaves and Fishes Community Food Bank and with the young students at Georgia Avenue Community School.
Terry's greatest pride and accomplishment in his life was his family. He was a devoted Father who deeply loved his daughters and grandchildren with his whole being. Terry's huge hugs, wonderful sense of fun and comical sayings will forever be cherished and missed. He will be fondly remembered as Dad, Grandad, Grandpa and Papa. To many, he will be remembered as "Doc" and to all who knew him, a very wise and down to earth man who had an incredible sense of humor. He will be deeply missed and held in the hearts of his daughters Nancy, Susan, Pamela (Michael), Kathy (Darren) and Heather (John), his grandchildren Emma, Samuel, Makena, Hayden, Sadie and Eva and his sisters Gale and Andrea.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude for the love, care and support provided by the amazing Palliative Care team at the Nanaimo General Hospital. Thank you to all the beautiful souls who blessed Terry with their compassion during his final months.
There will be a private family celebration of life. Friends are invited to share donations in Terry's name to Loaves & Fishes Community Food Bank, Nanaimo, B.C. (donate@nanaimoloavesandfishes.org) or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
