November 17, 1935 - October 23, 2022
In loving memory ~
Bill has skated his last shift, counselled his last group, walked his last portage and paddled his last lake. He passed away on October 23 with his wife of 58 years Patricia by his side. Bill touched so many lives as Camp Councillor and Director, Psychiatrist, Hockey Coach, Father and Friend. Bill was much loved and respected and will be fondly remembered. Bill is survived by his wife Patricia; Sons, Rob (Heather) and James (Janice); Grandchildren, Emily, Kathleen, Nick and Brody; Sisters, Ruthanne (Kim) and Janet (Nelson), and numerous other relatives and friends.
Bill was born in Calgary. His first career was with the YMCA teaching campers and operating wilderness camps, culminating in a role as the Director at Camp Chief Hector on the edge of the Rockies. He went on to become a Doctor, and then specialized in Psychiatry. In 1979 the family relocated to Comox following a sailing vacation he and Patricia had taken there. He continued his work as a psychiatrist and in the final stages of his professional life focused on group counselling and helping people suffering from psychological trauma. Bill never lost his love of the outdoors from his YMCA days, and combining this with his interest in Canadian history led him, over a series of summers, to paddle a large portion of the voyageur route from Lake Superior to the Clearwater River in Alberta, both solo and with his sons.
His other great love was hockey, coaching both his boys when they first started to play and playing himself for as long as his body would allow.
Bill will be greatly missed by many friends and family. A Celebration of life will be held in Comox, but specific plans are not yet in place.
