November 9, 1945 - June 27, 2024
In Loving Memory ~
It is with great sadness that we share the passing and celebrate the life of Douglas Turko. Doug passed away on June 27th, 2024, at the Campbell River Hospital. Much like in life, Doug was surrounded by family and friends until the very end.
Doug was born on November 9th, 1945, and grew up in Mesachie Lake, BC. The 6th child of 7, he grew up as a proud boy scout and avid hockey player, often skipping school in favour of the ice rink.
He moved to Campbell River, BC in 1969 where he built his family home at the end of Douglas Road and was blessed with 2 sons. He met and married the love of his life, Rosa, in 1989, wholeheartedly taking on the role of stepdad and grandpa to Rosa's sons and grandchildren.
Doug worked at the TimberWest sawmill from 1969 until his retirement in 2006. In retirement, he enjoyed travelling with Rosa, dancing, swimming, spending time with his growing family, collecting cans, and above all else, fishing.
Doug was a steadfast friend and neighbour, jumping to action whenever someone was in need. He wouldn't hesitate to give you the shirt off his back, as is exemplified by the number of people who called him a friend.
Doug is survived by his wife Rosa; son Jamie; stepsons Mike (Cheryl), and Greg (Loletta); grandchildren Kristelle (Taelor), David (Melissa), Andrew, Cheyenne (David), Harrison, Ethan, and Alexandra; great grandchildren Ever, Lochlin, Waylon, and Ava; siblings John (Betty), Bill, Bob (Judy), Ann (Ed), Maryann (Steve), their families, and many friends.
Doug is predeceased by his son Teddy, mother Mary, father Jim, sister Rose, brother-in-law John, and sisters-in-law Lynn, Joan, Elizabeth, Bertha, and Shirley.
A celebration of life will be held on Monday, August 12th, 2024, from 1-4pm at the Campbell River Maritime Heritage Center. In lieu of flowers,
Doug requested that the Canucks take home the Stanley Cup next year, however donations made to the Campbell River Hospital in his name are also welcome.
