August 6, 1954 - December 2, 2021
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Douglas Squire December 2, 2021 after a short but devastating battle with Leukemia. Doug was born 6th August 1954 in Nanaimo to Earl and Jean Squire, and was the eldest of five children.
He is survived by his beloved wife Kelly, children Lucas and Alana, sister Mary Ellen Rodway (Keith), and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.
Doug grew up in the Harewood area and had fond memories of an idyllic childhood with lots of friends in a close-knit neighborhood. In his younger years he worked in forestry for Crown Zellerbach, some local mills, and for the department of highways building bridges.
It was after an accident in the woods that fate changed his career. He started working for Air B.C. in 1983 at the Nanaimo harbour front and was later transferred to Nanaimo Airport. Doug worked for Air Canada Jazz for 37 plus years until his retirement October 2020.
It was at the airport that he met his soulmate Kelly. They were married in 1993, and had their children shortly thereafter. Doug wanted so much to be a father, and was happy to be a great family man.
He attended every football game, soccer game, cadet parade, and ballet recital that he could. Early days were spent camping with the kids, trips to Disneyland, Prince Edward Island, and Drumheller to see the dinosaurs.
Doug and Kelly loved to travel to the Bahamas, the Hawaiian Islands, and recently to England and Scotland. Doug loved Edinburgh, the history and the pubs. Doug loved to enjoy a fine Greek meal, but was also happy to go out for a good burger and a pint.
Doug loved his hockey and played in the Recreational league for the Rustlers and then for the Old timers on the original Steamers team. He was also a motorcycle enthusiast and rode for many years. He and Kelly had many fond memories of trips through the interior. In recent years Doug and Kelly took up kayaking. They loved going around the local islands and taking leisurely paddles all over the coastline.
Doug was very social, had many friends, and was liked by all who knew him. A gentle giant, he was known for his big bear hugs, his hearty belly laugh, and his fine "DAD" jokes.
The world has lost a good man.

A Celebration of life will be held outside at the family home in the summer- COVID permitting.
We are sure everyone has a good "Dougie" story to tell.
