We lost our Doug to complications from a broken hip. He died peacefully in his sleep, at Queen's General Hospital in Liverpool, NS. Doug was born in Vancouver, BC, and spent his early years growing up in Bull Harbour, off the top end of Vancouver Island. Right from the start, he was a hard worker and very mechanically minded. As a young man, he worked in the logging industry and married his first wife, Barbara Jean Hess.

Later he was bitten by a passion for flying, and went off to start his own business. Both as a bush pilot and helicopter pilot, Doug spent 30 years above the forests of British Columbia. After three helicopter crashes he saw the merits of keeping his feet on the ground and managing the company from the safety of an office.

In 1980 he retired to a farming life outside Qualicum Beach, at Qualicum Bay, BC. It was at this point that he met Jackie, his new best friend and life partner. Years later, at his grand old age of 77, they drove across Canada with truck/ camper, horse trailer, 5 dogs and 2 horses. They went on to enjoy their retirement years on the Atlantic shores of Nova Scotia.

Doug is survived by his wife of 33 years, Jackie, who will miss her very best friend beyond words, his children Paul Ward (Elva) of Sexsmith, Alberta, Kathy McKay (Darrin) of Nanaimo, BC, Robert Ward (Ellie Harvey) of Vancouver and was pre-deceased by daughter, Laurie Ward. His grandchildren; Zach and Kyle McKay, Luke, Jeff, Levi and Tessie Ward, Alexandra McKinnon and Simon Ward have lost their grandpa. His great grandchildren are Maddie McKinnon and Keira and Amelia McKay.

Doug was famous for his love of animals, especially his dogs. In lieu of flowers, he would love it if you would donate to Elder Dog Canada, his favourite rescue charity. Also, please feel free to sign the guest book for Doug at www.huskilson.net.
