February 22, 1952 - October 5, 2019
Doug Ellis passed away on October 5, 2019 in Campbell River, B.C. He was an exceptional man who embraced his rich life - the pie guy in tie-dye. Doug was a longtime resident of Campbell River and active member of the community.
Doug was born on the Experimental Farm at the University of British Columbia, the youngest child of Bert and Greta Ellis. He grew up in Vancouver and Ocean Falls. He worked in the Ocean Falls pulp and paper mill before moving to Campbell River, where he worked in the Elk Falls Mill for 38 years. Doug served on the executive committee of the Papermaker's Union for 15 years and was president of the union when the Elk Falls Mill closed in 2010, working tirelessly to protect workers' rights and aid his friends and co-workers in their transition to new forms of employment.
Doug had a wide range of interests including golf, bowling, bridge, darts, pie baking, jam making, woodworking, coastal boating and fishing. He was active in the Tyee Club, the Eagles club, and a variety of fundraisers and auctions.
Doug was deeply committed to his friends and family. He maintained long-term relationships and friendships from his childhood, the mill, his union work and throughout Campbell River. He was a regular fixture at many of his favourite Campbell River hangouts, including Fogg Dukkers, White Tower, Duke's, the Ideal Cafe and many others. His workshop and home welcomed everyone. He similarly drew our family together, working to stay in touch with all of us and organize regular reunions. The depth of Doug's friendships and his commitment to family were apparent in the amazing outpouring of support as Doug's health declined over the last year.
Doug is predeceased by his parents and his oldest sister Mary Jean. He is survived by his older brother Andy (Haida Gwaii) and sister Margaret (Salt Spring Island), five nieces and nephews and seven great-nieces and nephews.
The Family would like to express their deep appreciation for the compassion and love shown to Doug on this final journey. Everyone we encountered in the medical system (Campbell River Hospital and Home Support, Victoria General, B.C. Cancer Agency in Victoria, The Vancouver Island Lodge -Canadian Cancer Society and Royal Jubilee Hospital) were outstanding: remarkable in their professionalism, compassion and dedication to his comfort and well-being. Doug's friends and community maintained him through his medical struggles, which meant the world to Doug and the family.
Doug was a big-hearted man, full of life, with a wicked sense of humour he will be fondly remembered and deeply missed.
A celebration of life will be held in Doug's honour and memory, 1 - 4 pm Friday, November 8 at the Campbell River Eagles Hall (1999 14th Ave) in Campbell River, B.C.
