October 20, 1922 - June 21, 2022
It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of our mother Doris Edmondson on June 21, 2022 with family by her side, just four months shy of her 100th birthday.
She lived independently in her own home up until her brief hospital stay. Doris, this wonderful lady lived and died on her own terms.
She was predeceased by her husband of 74 years Thomas Edmondson, parents Cecil Dakin & Anita Dakin (Pyne) , brother Fredrick Dakin & son-in-law Bob Eyford. Doris would also have wanted us to include Reba Dakin (her father's house keeper after her mother passed away when she was only 8...Doris was very fond of her and she had a positive influence on her young life)
Doris is survived by children Judy, Lynn (Brian), David (Liven), Sandy (Steve), Sharon (Dale)... 15 grandchildren,17 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren and numerous friends across the country.
Doris was born in Centerville N.S. a small fishing village on the Bay of Funday a place she often spoke about and had warm memories and close friends that she had kept in touch with her entire life. Like most people of her generation life had its challenges ..particularly the depression & WWII.
After completing high school Doris worked doing service type jobs around Centerville until she made the move to Dartmouth N.S. where she worked in retail.
It was in Dartmouth at a dance for Canadian Servicemen she met Tom and they soon became a couple. After a short courtship Doris and Tom were married in Winnipeg Manitoba where they resided and started their family (2 daughters).
Tom's career triggered them to move first to Burlington Ont. & then to Edmonton Alberta .. it was in Edmonton where they added to their family (1 boy & 2 more girls). During the earlier years raising her family she canned everything that grew in the garden or hung from a tree .. made her own pickles/realises/chutney.. and she was known to be able to stretch a dime into a dollar.
When Doris had the opportunity, she re-entered the work force .. working at the Hudson Bay & then Woodward's dept. stores.. She ended her career working at Capital Care Norwood Seniors Home in Edmonton .. but not before getting her driver's licence and buying her own car at 56 years of age.
Doris & Tom decided to move to the West Coast after retirement first to Parksville (1983) then to Port Alberni in 2001. While in Parksville, Doris almost immediately began to volunteer giving many hours of time to Arrowsmith Nursing Home and to the SOS Thrift Shop.. also filling the need to give back & socialize with others.
After the move to Port Alberni, Doris would often comment the only thing wrong with the move is she wished they had done it sooner. She loved living in her condo home and was so happy and appreciative of her neighbours..
Doris and Tom had a very active retirement, members of the Port Alberni Sunshine Club where they participated in many Bus and Camping trips. Enjoyed several cruises visiting the Caribbean ,Baltic Sea ,Iceland and the Hawaiian Islands. They also vacationed in Australia , New Zealand & Fiji and took several cross country trips to the Maritimes by train and car.
The Family would like to thank the staff of the Palliative care wing of the West Coast General Hospital for their care and kindness during Doris's stay in the hospital..
Celebration of life to be announced at a later date.
