January 28, 1948 - August 22, 2019
A sudden loss of a husband, father, brother, granddad, uncle, friend, has left a lovely memory of a man that meant the world to all that knew him. Don and Daphne spent an amazing fifty years together. Raising children, logging, farming, fishing and everything else they could fit in with their spare time.
Don gave everything he had to his trade. At first he logged alongside with his father at Macmillan Bloedel, then finally for Weyerhaeuser. The work was hard, but honest, and gave him pride in a job well done. This ethic he passed down to his children. While it was a fulfilling yet dangerous job, there was always room for a laugh. Many of his falling buddies had to look into the trees on a Monday morning for their axe that "Donny " had thrown twenty feet up the next tree they were to down that morning.
Farming was Don's second job. He and his wife worked the land on Telegraph Road. Bought in the early eighties, during the recession, they toiled, tilled, logged, raised crops and cattle, all the while bringing up three children.
Don was a true friend to all that passed his way. Whether you knew him minute or a lifetime, he would go the extra mile to help someone out. No call for assistance went unanswered.
When Don and Daph had the chance, they went to Pedder Bay and fished on their boat-Torphins. The thrill of the catch was to see your name and boats name on the leader board, and fill your freezer with "the big ones."
Don fought Parkinson's disease for most the last thirty years. It was a challenge that he battled and sometimes overcame. Even though his body slowly failed him, his love for his bride and family never did.
As a family we wish to thank all of the people that have made it possible for Don to stay in their home. To Paivi, Tami, Karl, Maude, Bev, BCEHS, CBVFR, Dr Robertson, and so many others, much thanks.
Don does not leave any of us behind; we will carry him in our hearts forever. His wife Daphne, children Richard (Michelle), Pamela, Kevin (Nadia), eight grandchildren, his sister Maureen, and brother Stephen, will carry on his legacy. He was a family man first and foremost.
With respect he asked that a family and friend gathering be held once he passed at "The Farm." This will take place October 12 2019, from 12:00-3:00. No flowers by request, donations to the Parkinson's Society in his honor would be greatly appreciated.
Rest well Don, your work here is done.
