In loving memory ~
Don passed away peacefully at home with family by his side. Don was born in Vancouver, B.C. to parents Matt Werner & Ethel Grace Sundquist. The family moved to Merville when Don was 6 months old and later to Courtenay. Eventually the family moved to Nanaimo and settled in 1946.
Don was predeceased by his parents. He leaves to mourn his loving wife Martha of 70 years. Brother Ted (Shirley), son Don (Cheryl), daughters Barbra (Henk), Kathleen (Al), niece Kellie (Terry), and many more nieces and nephews.
Grandchildren Michael, Karla, Kimberly, Matthew, Alex, Jason and Rylee. Great-grandchildren Noah, Ryder, Summer, Ella, Walker, Willow, Cody, Liam and Benjamin.
Don attended John Shaw High School in Nanaimo. He quit at the age of 15 to start a carpenter's apprenticeship with Quinney and Fuller of Nanaimo. He met Martha the winter of 1951 and they were married in August 1952. Don finished his carpentry apprenticeship in October 1952. In 1967 Don formed his own construction company called Don Sundquist Construction Ltd. He built custom homes one at a time until retirement.
Don was a member of the Nanaimo Fish and Game Club, Qualicum/Parksville Fish and Game Club and Wildlife Records of B.C.
Don's lifelong passion was fly fishing. He used to ride his bike from downtown Nanaimo to Westwood Lake where he would spend his days fly fishing. Don also spent many cold February days with his fishing buddy Kurt at Sprout Lake. Don loved to RV with his wife Martha. They travelled many places but his most favourite places were the Yukon and Alaska. For many years Don and Martha were snowbirds in California traveling with their RV. In later years Don stayed close to home and enjoyed gardening and visiting with his neighbor Len. Don spent many hours watching and studying Bob Ross videos and became a very talented artist. Many happy hours were spent painting in his den while watching Gunsmoke.
Don and Martha celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in August 2022, at Kathie and Al's "The Farm" surrounded by close family and friends.
The family would like to thank Dr Szachnowska and team at West Memorial Medical clinic for all their help and support during this difficult time.
Don appreciated the respect and care he received from the HCA's during his short stay at Woodgrove Manor.
Special thanks to Oceanside Home & Community Care team. Dad always enjoyed talking with the staff that assisted him with his care. We appreciated all of your help. Your hearts are definitely in the right place. Job well done and thank you again.
