David Klus

October 4, 2018

The family is heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved David. He passed away peacefully with his wife by his side.

Born in Temiscaming, Quebec, David had an honorable career as an officer in the Canadian Military. As an Air Navigator with 436 Sqn he flew into conflict zones, on UN and tactical missions, was involved with standards and training and was a skilled search master, (later becoming the Deputy Officer in Charge of the Rescue Coordination Center in Esquimalt). David was on the team that developed the first video disc for the Canadian Military, precursor to the modern CD. As well, he was one of 60 accepted finalists for the first Canadian space program.

After taking early retirement he and his wife, Trisha, purchased the Masthead Restaurant and Marina in Cowichan Bay and with his acute business acumen, developed it into a successful business. A lifelong learner, he wasn't afraid to tackle any project.

He built boats, renovated homes, was an award winning model railroader, a knowledgeable philatelist, a rock-hound and gem cutter, a master gardener and world traveler, having visited over 80 countries. He enjoyed fine wines, good food and the outdoors with his family-skiing, hiking, fishing and sailing (sometimes competitively).

He was a hard worker, kind, generous, decent, honest and loyal. David was extremely intelligent, a creative thinker and an extraordinary problem solver. He has left a huge void in his family's life and will be dearly missed but never forgotten.

There will be no funeral as David's body was donated to the Department of Cellular & Physiological Sciences at UBC.
