A River Runs Thru All of Us
David was a Scots Celt from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia —Daffit O'Fearghus. A particularly Nature-wise fellow, he didn't need attention and cultivated a private, anonymous life the way some other folks cultivate celebrity.
In the 70's he was active with the Wreck Beach Preservation Society (Vancouver), acting as the shaman and defender of the then-little-known nudist community. Once he moved to Merville, he worked to start a shiitake mushroom farm. And for money, as an oyster shucker.
He was very involved with the formation of the federal Green Party. Locally he was active with Comox Valley Environmental Council, Watershed Assembly, and Tsolum River Task Force. As a part of the Tsolum River Restoration Society, he was a major player in cleaning up the Mt Washington mine site, an abandoned site that was acid-leachate-poisoning his beloved Tsolum River for 40 years. Now thousands of salmon return every year.
In the mid 2000's he went to live in the bush, a self-proclaimed "1004 day wilderness retreat - taking care of the river." He would occasionally be seen biking the 15 miles into town for food and mail. His final home was in Dove Creek.
Now in Tir na Nog (Land of Youth), the Celtic Otherworld, a paradise and supernatural realm of everlasting youth, beauty, health, abundance, and joy.
Dave's maxims-
1. Be a Fundamentalist: make sure the Fun always comes before the mental. Realize that life is a situation comedy that will never be cancelled.
2. Life is like photography. You use the negative to develop.
3. If you're looking to find the key to the Universe, I have some bad news and some good news. The bad news: there is no key to the Universe. The good news: it has been left unlocked.
