With shattered hearts we announce the death of our Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother and friend. Daryth (nicked named "Piffa" by her family) was born and raised in New Norway, Alberta. Daughter of Ole and Mae Olstead. Sister of Orline, James, William and Donald. All predeceased. Theirs was one of the founding families of New Norway, Alberta. Daryth worked in the local Egg Grading Plant and Creamery as a young woman.
She married a local boy, Glen Tracy Mutchler in 1946. They moved to Surrey, BC shortly thereafter. Daryth worked as a Nurses Aide at Essendale in New Westminster for several years and seasonally for Segram's Distillery. They built a house in Surrey and raised two children, Marty and Kathryn there. She loved to dance and attended many dances in her day. She took great pride in her home and provided thousands of tasty dishes and treats for her family and friends.
Daryth loved to go fishing in her younger days. She could catch, gut and fry up a mean fish! Daryth was an amazingly handy woman. Loved to read and created some amazingly beautiful paper toll art. Also played the accordion and organ. She was a hard worker until the last couple of years of her life when the spirit was willing but the body and Alzheimer's said no. She loved to listen to old country music and passed away listening to the soothing gospel of Jim Reeves. Daryth moved to Lantzville, BC on Vancouver Island in 1975. Later married Charles Romeo Hupper (deceased). Daryth remained in Nanaimo for the rest of her life. She loved living here and made many friends throughout her life.
She was a Life Time Member of the Ladies Auxillary for the Branch 257 Royal Canadian Legion in Lantzville. Was a long time member of NRGH Ladies Auxillary. She enjoyed giving back to her community. Arranged many gathering and entertainment at her Seniors Apt. Building on Seafield Cres. She was extremely proud to be baptized in the, Anglican Church in 1987.
Daryth will be forever in the memories of her children, Marty Mutchler (Susan), and Kathryn Macdonald (Rod). Grandchildren: Ken, Cory, Kris (Roxanne), Craig, Marty, Lainie, Ron and David (Andrea). Great grandchildren: Tannea, Tristan, Luca, Nolan, Reid and Terrance. A heart felt thank you to the staff at Wexford Creek and Nanaimo District Home Support. A Family Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. She will be returning home to New Norway, Alberta.
