October 20, 1942 - May 19, 2021
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Darlene after a short stay at RJH. She was surrounded by her beloved husband Alec, and her family.
Darlene was a loving and devoted wife to Alec, mother to Aaron (Sonia) Haras, and Heidi Haras (Kim McKinley), step-mother to Ken (Anita) Wood, and Kelly Wood (Dr. Bin Lim).
She also leaves behind her brothers Rodger (Cathy) Roy, Wayne (Cathie) Roy, her sister Yvonne Burnett, 7 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephew, and cousins.
Although she faced many health challenges over the last six years, she faced each obstacle with optimism and grace. She lived her life to the fullest, and cherished every day she had with her family and friends.
Darlene loved her little home on the beach and cruises with their closest friends, but she was happiest on the "PT" with Alec, cooking up the catch of the day, enjoying the quiet, and of course, reading a few good books!
Darlene was well respected in the business community and was known for her sharp business sense, her principles and her attention to detail. She was a hard worker and was extremely proud of her accomplishments.
Darlene cared a great deal for all her staff and was always genuinely concerned for them and their families. She was especially thankful that over the last few years "the girls" in the office took on many more of her responsibilities.
Darlene was a class act. She was known as a person who treated everyone she met with kindness and dignity. It didn't matter who showed up at her door, she would welcome you in with a hug and a smile, and happily share a drink and a meal.
She was kind, gregarious, witty and loyal; her zest for life, her smile, and that twinkle in her eye when she laughed will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
We would like to thank all the staff at Campbell River Hospital and the staff at Royal Jubilee Hospital Cancer Centre for the wonderful care she received over the years. As well, we would like to recognize the amazing people at Royal Jubilee Hospital - 7 North Wing - who looked after Darlene in her last week.
We will be forever grateful for the compassion and kindness you gave to Darlene and us at the most difficult time we have ever faced.
There will be a Celebration of Life announced at a later date. If you wish, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
