March 5, 1966 - May 13, 2022
It is with shattered hearts we announce the passing of our family solitaire and guiding light, surrounded by family at the age of 56. The pinnacle and glue to our blended quirky lovable family.
Darla lived in Nanaimo for most of her childhood, middle child of the 6 D's - the diplomat and negotiator, humble, considerate, and kind.
Navigating north to Lantzville, after marrying Joe, her soul mate and rock where they lived happily by the sea for the past 30 years.
Her keen sense of organization and attention to detail drew her to the profession of Legal Secretary which she enjoyed immensely. Talented pianist, and card maker but her most proud pursuits were Mother to her son Adrian, Stepmom to Jeff and Heidi and Nana to Landen and Owen.
As Joes loyal sidekick they enjoyed many family holidays on Mt Washington, throughout the US and Europe.
Diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in 2002. She endured more medical treatments and procedures than fathomable, yet never complained and more concerned of others it effected. She deserved an honorary pharmaceutical degree and a gold medal for her resilience, determination, and strength.
Even though failing health took her away from this world her loving heart left a ray of sunshine to all the lives she touched. She bonded families and friends, taught us loyalty, humour and respect. One couldn't design a better wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend. Her grace and warmth will never be forgotten.
Left missing her deeply, her husband Joe, children Adrian, Jeff (Brandi), Heidi (Jason), grandsons Landen and Owen, mother Donna Booth, father Don Varney, siblings Denise (Ralph), Dave (Barb), Darcy, nieces and nephews, Alex, Sam, Cody, Jamie-Lynne, Jack, Robbie and Marisa, In-laws Ralph, Lannie, Albert, Emily and numerous extended family, long time loyal friends Janet Povey, Tricia and John Elliot.
Special thanks to her care team, particularly Dr. Walker and Dr. Neville. Donations can be made to the BC Cancer Foundation Donate (bccancer.bc.ca
The family wishes to express our gratitude to all our wonderful friends. The outpouring of love and heartfelt sympathy has been humbling, a great comfort and very much appreciated. A private celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
