May 25, 1954 - December 27, 2020
With sadness and a heavy heart, our family said goodbye to our husband, father and grandfather, Dan McIntyre during the early morning hours of December 27th. Dan passed away comfortably at the Cowichan Lodge in Duncan with his family by his side after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease, and leaves behind him a life full of laughter, hard work and dedication to making others feel safe and cared for.
Dan was an amazing man, always full of smiles and a nurturing quality about him that always left his friends and loved ones feeling included and loved.
Born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Dan spent time living in Montreal and Port Alberni, finally calling Nanaimo home for the past forty years. Dan built a career in baking that spanned over thirty years with Quality Foods and became very famous for his specialty breads and birthday cakes.
Aside from his family, Dan's biggest passion in life was rugby. Playing rugby throughout high school, and later for Malaspina College in the 1970's, Dan was immediately drawn to the comradery and hooliganism of the Nanaimo Hornets Rugby Club. A dedicated rugby club man, Dan was a founding member of the log cabin clubhouse that the Hornets passionately call home today.
Dan always enjoyed everything to do with the beach and particularly, the ocean. Decades of summers were spent at 4 All Seasons. Dan could full-on float in the water, which always amazed on-lookers and he was an expert on the barbecue.
Dan had a huge heart and a positive effect on nearly everyone he came across. Dan is survived by his loving wife, Jan, son, Trevor (Laura) and two adoring grandkids, Evyn and Rhys.
Our family would like to extend a tremendous thank you to all of the health care staff at Cowichan Lodge that cared for Dan over these past two months and also to our incredible friends and family who supported us during this long journey.
The love and generosity that Dan bestowed upon others is seemingly infinite and he will be incredibly missed.
Dan's family graciously asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Alzheimer's Society of British Columbia.
A celebration of Dan's life will take place at a later date when it is safe to do so.
