June 6, 1925 - September 18, 2019
Cor was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and passed peacefully in Port Alberni. Predeceased in 2012 by his wife of 60 years, Corrie, Cor is survived by children Yvonne and Andrew.
Cor was born and raised aboard a river freighter sailing the Rhine River, which gave him a lifelong love of all things nautical. Cor was living in Rotterdam when the city was destroyed during the Nazi occupation in 1940. Following the war, Cor studied to be a bookkeeper, but saw little future in the Netherlands. Corrie and Cor were married 25 January, 1951, and immigrated to Canada in May of that year. They went directly to Port Alberni and stayed for the rest of their lives, making a life for themselves and raising a family.
Cor loved animals and was a founding member of the Alberni Valley SPCA, being their bookkeeper for several years. His love of the sea lead Cor to the Power Squadron where here taught navigation for 20 years and earned him a lifetime membership. Cor followed his son to Sea Cadets and became a civilian instructor, teaching cadets knot making and sailing. The day Cor and Corrie arrived in Port Alberni, Cor was hired at the Somass Sawmill, where he stayed for 33 years before taking early retirement. Cor had worked his way up from being a stick layer to being general shipper at the time of his retirement.
Yvonne and Drew would like to thank Jason, Deanna and Zoe Kevis for the help and support they have given dad over the years. They would also like to thank the staff at Rainbow Gardens for their care, compassion and patience over the past year.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Cor at the home along the river he loved, on his birthday, June 6, 2020.
