March 8, 1922 - April 30, 2019
Clarence passed peacefully on April 30, 2019 in Courtenay.
He leaves behind to mourn him his wife of 32 years, Kay (Cathleen) Cox, nee Nord; his four sons: Don (Maureen), Courtenay; Dale (Marilyn), Bryne, and Bryon (Cyndy) all of Calgary. Continuing the line are five grandchildren: Brendan, Ryan, Kevin, Darryn, and Shauna plus 9 greatgrandchildren. Also left are Kay's children: Debbie (Brian) Erickson, Gaye Kingdon, Shannon Cox, and Bryce (Anne) Cox; and their children. He was predeceased by his first wife Mary Patterson, all his siblings, and Randy Cox.
He was born to Chauncey Morey and Alice Stayton in Bow Island Alberta on March 8, 1922, 9th in a family of 10.
Clarence arrived in the Valley area after inheriting the Denman Island home of his brother, Chancey in 1981. He and Kay moved to Comox in 2004. Clarence loved square dancing and was a long-time member of Ocean Waves. He also was an avid bridge player, having learned to play at 10 years old.
His dream career was to work on the railroad, but it was not to be. However, his favorite story was from that time when as an enthusiastic rookie fireman, he built up such a head of steam on a steam engine going through the Crow's Nest Pass that an unheard of third pressure valve had to be released. He said it made quite a noisy impression on his engineer and the community. With his interest in interior design, he began work as an upholsterer at the Palliser Hotel in Calgary while running his own business on the side. He finished up his working life as a postal clerk.
He lived his whole life strongly adhering to his values: personal integrity, a determination to always look after his family, and not least, hard work. He leaves a lasting legacy.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Davyduke and the staff at the Seniors' Village, particularly unit 1D. We are so grateful for their care of Clarence and us.
