November 12, 1937 - November 2, 2024
In loving memory ~
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of (Charlotte) Nelda Kulhawy, 87, on Nov. 2, 2024, in Nanaimo, BC. Nelda was born on Nov. 12, 1937, in New Westminster, BC, to Frank and Rhoda (Pallot) Cobbaert. She was predeceased by brothers Ed and Robert, and survived by siblings Frank, Rachel and Lisa.
Nelda is survived by her beloved husband of 69 years, Nicholas (Nick) Kulhawy, and their children, Niki-Lou Mackin (Harold), Robert (Jill), Phillip (Judy), and David (Heidi), as well as a legacy of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Nick and Nelda married Aug. 27/55, marking the beginning of a lifelong partnership. When Nick started Nick's Flooring in Calgary, Nelda's organizational skills and strong work ethic were crucial to its success. She managed the office and kept operations running smoothly. This work ethic extended again into retirement in 1989, when, after moving to Vancouver Island, they started Mastercraft Flooring.
Her compassion and energy seemed boundless. In their "spare" time, they took in 67 foster children and started a teen club, offering love and stability to children and youth. Nelda was also an active member of the Royal Purple, rising to the position of "Honoured Royal Lady."
An avid reader and world traveller, she visited over 60 countries but was happiest spending time with her family and the many friends she treated like family. Nelda will be remembered for her kindness, compassion, work ethic, generous nature, and sense of humour. Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched.
A celebration of life will be held at Calvary Baptist Church, Chemainus B.C., at 1:00 pm Sat., Nov. 30, 2024.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Rotary Club of Duncan. rotaryclubofduncan@gmail.com or text 250-701-2872
