Cathe Mildred Cocks

June 7, 1927 – February 27, 2022
Cathe passed away on February 27, 2022 at the Chemainus Health Care Centre.
She is predeceased by her husband, Murray and her son Barry, as well as her siblings James Chisolm and Margaret Rossi, and companion John Buick.
Cathe leaves surviving her son Brian, his wife, Patty, their children Alexandra (Patrick) and Adam (Tran), and grand children Angus, Aurora, Logan, Liam and Cameron, and her daughter Kelle Maag, her husband, Frank and their children Chad (Pallavi), Bryce (Anthony) and Karleigh (Ross).
Born in Vancouver on June 7, 1927 as Cathe Mildred Chisholm, Cathe was always a spit-fire – bright, active, feisty, cheeky and just a little bit stubborn. She attended Normal School for teacher training and started her career at the Cowichan High School teaching P.E. after marrying Murray Cocks in 1949.
With some time off to have children, Cathe continued her career in education in the Cowichan Valley, moving to Chemainus in 1967 and working at the elementary level until her retirement in 1987. Cathe enjoyed her final teaching years as a Special Education educator at several schools.
Still eager to be involved in the community, Cathe started a new career as North Cowichan councillor in 1988 and held that position (as well as Deputy Mayor for a time) until 1999. Cathe enjoyed interacting with residents and helping to solve their municipal issues.
She saw the role of municipal council as a provider of basic services – roads, sewer, water. She was handily elected each time on that platform.
Cathe loved to travel, play golf and bridge, and enjoyed her grandchildren. She did not fit into the typical grandma mold (baking was anathema and handicrafts abhorred), but her interactions with her grandchildren – engaging, encouraging, challenging, playing games and travelling – all formed special memories for them. You never got a “by” from Grandma, but she was 100% behind you when you needed her.
Cathe filled many wonderful chapters in our lives and we will miss her.
