July 22, 1960 - September 17, 2019
Carolyn Dale Dolecki (nee Ellis), born in Victoria, British Columbia on July 22, 1960, died after an 11-year battle with breast cancer on September 17, 2019. She was predeceased by her father, RCAF Captain Harold Ellis (Ret.) and survived by her mother Lynn Ellis, sister Liz Latourell, nieces Nicole, Kara and Amanda and her beloved daughter, Krysta Dolecki.
In earlier years, Carolyn enjoyed swimming, camping, golf, sailing and playing darts. Some of her most cherished trips included time on Maui and PEI, discovering her ancestry in Ireland and Scotland and traveling throughout the US West Coast and SouthWest, culminating in her all-time bucket list wish of a hot air balloon ride over the Sedona desert at dawn.
After graduating in 1978 from Georges P. Vanier Secondary School in Courtenay, Carolyn took a circuitous route along her career path...working for this newspaper, the Canadian Coast Guard, Canada Customs, Vancouver General Hospital, then a variety of automotive industry businesses before returning to public service. She took great pleasure in mentoring throughout her public service career, providing encouragement and support for the career development of others.
Carolyn would not allow breast cancer to deter her from living her best possible life. She worked throughout treatments as lead marine transportation security planner for Transport Canada for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Despite progressive diagnoses, she continued to work for nine more years.
Carolyn was blessed with relationships that turned into lifetime friendships, and individual friends and family who shaped the person Carolyn ultimately became. She strove to be a strong and caring person. Her positive outlook and joyful gratitude remained to the end.
We wish to thank all the medical staff at Richmond General Hospital, BC Cancer Agency in Vancouver, along with medical staff at Surrey Memorial Hospital, palliative care staff with Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, Fraser Health Authority and Langley Hospice for their extraordinary care of Carolyn. Special appreciation to Drs Jetzer, Yun, Carolan, Paton, Cass and Duncan.
