December 20, 1933 - September 24, 2021
A life well lived.
Carol (never Caroline!) grew up in Lymington, England and, after becoming an RN and marrying John, came to Canada in 1955 settling in Winnipeg, Calgary and eventually in Victoria with their 5 kids Gay, Kim, Bill, Chris and Tom. Carol worked at the Jubilee Hospital for a few years before joining the newly formed community nursing program for Victoria, working in Oak Bay, then Westshore, and finally in Sooke.
After retirement, they enjoyed traveling, and helping out in the Sooke community. She formed the Sooke Hospice society along with another nurse and doctor. She delivered Meals on Wheels, and helped shut-ins by shopping for and delivering their groceries.
Mum revisited her early love of theater by joining the Sooke players, enjoying the company of her fellow actors, and performing in many plays. She learned beekeeping and kept hives in her beautiful backyard.
A long time member of the Sooke Garden club, she loved helping the kids learn to grow things, and every Saturday could be found selling her homemade honey, jams and beeswax candles at the Sooke Country Market. Mum was a quilter and skilled at many handcrafts. We all have wonderful quilts she made.
She picked up home wine making, experimenting with daffodil, blackberry, quince and more. She learned to judge flowers and officiated at shows all over the southern and gulf islands.
An avid boater from a very young age, as a kid she helped start the Lymington boat club along with brother Bob and his friend. She joined Oak Bay Power Squadron, eventually earning her pilots license and was the Oak Bay Commander until she moved to Sooke and joined Sooke Power Squadron.
One of Mum's favorite things was a walk on Whiffin Spit with her dogs Karma, Zeno and Winston, catching up with her many human and doggie friends.
Carol Harding, RN, passed away peacefully on September 24, 2021 at home in her beloved community of Sooke where she spent years helping others live a better life. She is lovingly remembered as the powerhouse she was by her 5 children and their partners, her 15 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Special thanks to Linda and Holly for their support.
