March 22, 1929 - August 30, 2021
In Loving Memory ~ It is with great sadness that we advise of the peaceful passing away of Patricia at Avenir Memory Care at Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada on August 30, 2021. Patricia was attended at the time of her passing by sons (Adrian and David) and the caring staff at Avenir Memory Care.
Patricia was predeceased by her parents Daniel and Anne Brown (1964) and only sister, Glenys (2019) all of whom resided in the United Kingdom. She is survived by her two sons Adrian (Barbara) and David (Rita) and her much loved grandchildren (Dylan, Alyssa, Gareth and Daniel(Julie)) and great grandchildren (Tristan and Penelope).
Patricia was born in Holyhead, Anglesey, Wales on March 22, 1929. She remained in Holyhead where she was raised and attended primary and secondary schooling.
In 1952 the family relocated to Minneapolis, USA for two years before returning to Holyhead. Shortly afterward she married her husband Derek whom she had met while working at Butlin's holiday camps prior to the period in Minnesota.
Patricia thereafter followed Derek as he trained to become a Public Health Inspector to London where they lived for a period of time afterward. The next several years saw Derek and Patricia move to Southampton, Leicester and Whitchurch in Shropshire.
In June, 1968 the family emigrated from The U.K. and relocated in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Patricia had several jobs during the time in Edmonton, principally though she worked as secretary to the Chief Justices of Alberta.
Upon taking retirement in 1991 Derek and Pat left Edmonton to settle in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. Derek and Patricia bought a house which was undeveloped on the outside and in the basement for which Patricia ably assisted Derek as they turned it into a wonderful family home.
During their retirement they travelled back to the UK on many an occasion to visit the land they truly loved and also visited Brunei and Egypt when their son David was working there. In short, retirement agreed with them both and Patricia lived a full and satisfying life during the majority of this time.
At the age of 82 Derek was diagnosed with dementia for which he was lovingly cared for by Pat at their family home for five years.
Patricia was a devoted wife to Derek and on March 15, 2017 they celebrated 63 years of marriage. He soon after succumbed to his illness in April, 2017 and in June, 2017 Patricia tragically had a stroke whilst visiting her son Adrian in Sherwood Park, Alberta.
Thanks to the excellent care received at the U of A hospital Patricia made a go of continuing her life at her home in Nanaimo but in February, 2018 she was relocated to Memory Care of Nanaimo to receive the care that she needed for a more comfortable life.
She lived the rest of her life out surrounded by the caring staff at Memory Care and in frequent company of both of her sons and family. On August 30, 2021 she passed away and is now reunited with Derek and those of her family that went before.
Very special thanks are extended to the staff at Avenir Memory Care at Nanaimo for their dedication, compassion and loving care that was especially in evidence during the difficult period during Covid and in the last months of her life.
A memorial service to give thanks for her life will be held in the Sands Funeral Chapel in Nanaimo on October 6, 2021 which will be attended by family and friends. In due course her cremated remains will be returned to Wales along with those of her late husband Derek where they will both be laid to rest.
