It's with sad and heavy hearts that we announce the passing, after a lengthy illness, of our beloved Bert, aged 76. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Berna; daughter Cheryl (Warren); grandchildren: Brad (Ashley), Jennifer (Stephane), and Breanna; great grandchildren: Kaiden, Carsen, Cameron, and Brinley; brothers: Bob (Linda), David (Linda), and Don (Renee); many nieces, nephews, a large extended family, and friends. He was predeceased by his son Wade, his parents Earl & Mary, and brothers Philip and Ervin.

Bert was born in Bellsite, Manitoba and moved to Campbell River with his family in 1951. After school, his work history was versatile, from a sawmill/pulp-mill worker, to logging contractor, trucking/delivery service owner/operator, faller/bucker contractor, and in later years a home/yard maintenance service. A multitalented man, he worked until his health failed him about 10 years ago.

He was very sociable and loved to entertain and get everyone involved. When Bert was the president of the Campbell River Canoe Club he was instrumental at promoting the beginning of the CR Water Festival at McIvor Lake in 1968. In its third year, the Water Festival moved to downtown Campbell River as the CR Summer Festival. It grew into what is now the renowned CR Salmon Festival. During his tenure with the festival he launched the famous local Cod Jigger Stomp. A passionate instigator of the arranging of many parties, he entertained us all with his accomplished guitar playing and fabulous singing of an endless repertoire of country/ western/rock songs.

It was heart breaking for Bert and the whole family when his health was such that he had to go into residential care. Thanks to the staff of Discovery Harbour Care Centre for their dedicated care over the last three years. At Bert's request there will be no service.
