January 7, 1927 - July 21, 2020
We are saddened to announce the passing of Bernadette Critchley in Nanaimo, B.C. on July 21, 2020. Bernadette was born on January 7, 1927 in Longridge, England, to Herbert and Monica Richmond, and was one of six children.
Mom was predeceased by her husband John in 2019. She is survived by her daughter Noreen (Rod), Morrison, sons Alan (Liz) Critchley and Peter Critchley, 5 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
When Mom was 16, she went to work in a cotton mill in Longridge, running cotton machines to produce fabric for the war effort. Mom married Dad in 1947, and they immigrated to Canada with their 3 children in 1957.
Mom had a strong faith, and was very active in the Catholic community. She was a member of the Catholic Women's League and Legion of Mary, and later became a Eucharistic Minister. She had a beautiful voice and enjoyed singing in the church choir.
For a considerable time, Mom and Dad were involved with marriage enrichment activities and working with engaged couples. Mom and Dad loved ballroom dancing and it was a treat to watch them glide around the dance floor. They were also avid travellers.
Mom was a devoted wife, and a caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Mom always had a warm smile and it was a treasure to spend time with her. She was never short on advice! We will miss her dearly.
We are all very grateful for the staff at Stanford Senior Village in Parksville who cared for Mom with compassion and kindness. We know that she was safe and loved during this time of restricted access.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
A funeral mass will be held on August 8 at 11 am at the Church of the Ascension in French Creek. Due to Covid 19 restrictions, a reception is not possible at this time.
Mom's final resting place will be in Nanaimo alongside her husband John.
