September 26, 1926 - February 10, 2021
After 94 years filled with adventure, Bent passed away peacefully on Feb 10, 2021. Bent was born on Sept 26, 1926 and spent his youth in Roskilde, Denmark. He immigrated to Canada in 1951, starting his journey in Halifax.
Together with two travelling companions he met during his first days in Canada, Bent crossed the country while working at odd jobs mainly in mining and logging. He settled in Prince George, B.C. where he met and married his wife Jeanie.
Bent started his career in insurance soon after and moved his young family to the Comox Valley in 1961. In 1967 he co-founded Comox Valley Insurance Service, now Waypoint Insurance.
Throughout his career and his life Bent was a very generous supporter of his community. His most active support was with Rotary and the Comox Valley Community Foundation.
He was also the local face of Rotaplast, an International program sponsored by Rotary International. This group travels throughout the world providing cleft lip and palate surgery. Bent fundraised tirelessly and volunteered as a non-medic on seven Rotaplast missions - the last when he was in his mid 80's.
Bent loved boating, cruising and travelling. He was active throughout his lifetime, and could be seen participating in just about every sport and activity imaginable - from marathon running starting in his late 40's to solo sky diving in celebration of his 80th birthday.
He cycled with both of his sons from Bruges to Amsterdam to celebrate his 90th birthday.
Bent is predeceased by his wife Jeanie (1999) and his daughter Judith (2018). He leaves behind his partner Annette, his sister Grete and many dearly loved relatives in Denmark, his children; Ian (Louise), Lorne (Saskia), and grandchildren; Rhiannon, Amber, Julian, Phaedra, Jeremy, Marisa and Kelsey.
Bent will be remembered by his family and those whom his life touched as someone who lived his life with grace, generosity and kindness. He will forever be an inspiration to us and will live on in our hearts always. His parting words were "It sure has been a lot of fun - what an incredible adventure".
Due to COVID there will be no gathering for a celebration of Bent's life. The following link is to a slide show that gives a glimpse into Bent's long and happy life https://tinyurl.com/bentharder.
In lieu of flowers donations to the Comox Valley Community Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
