Art was born Sept 11, 1939 in New Westminster, he was a self made man. He did not have a lot of hobbies but he did have an insatiable thirst for knowledge, he was an incredible problem solver and entrepreneur.
In the early 70’s he built the first oversized log splitter operated it on the Fraser River, with his first company AB Contracting. Which led him to design and build the first submersible grid for test scaling log bundles.
He then moved onto building many boom boats, contracting for Crown Zellerback in Goliath Bay. He had his own trucking company for a few years, that he operated himself. In the early 80’s he built his first tugboat the MV Shaymar, and created Pacific Cachalot Ltd. The MV Shaymar was built to tend the first mobile marine chipper on the coast.
He started log towing for Crown Forest which eventually lead to building another tugboat the MV Yucata. At Pacific Cachalot’s prime Arthur owned and operated up to 10 tugs boats, and towed a large portion of the North Vancouver Island’s log booms. He was a pioneer in his industry.
