October 8, 1926 - May 23, 2019
On Thursday, May 23 2019, we lovingly said goodbye to our Mom and Oma, Antje (Ann) Gijsbers, at Fir Park Village at the age of 92 years. Ann was born in Amsterdam on October 8 1926 where she lived until she married the love of her life, Jan (John and immigrated to Canada in 1951. They settled in Port Alberni where they raised their two daughters, Maureen and Jane.
Ann loved to create. In Amsterdam she worked as a fashion designer and in Canada worked as a dressmaker for many years. She loved her hobbies of stitching and knitting and created many treasures for family and friends. Later in life Ann followed another life-long passion of hers, took a writing course, and with the help of dear fellow writers published her own collection of stories and poems.
Ann was predeceased by her parents Pieter and Jantje Sterrenberg, husband Jan, daughter Maureen Horst and son-inlaw Arnie Elder. She is survived by her sister Wolly Brons, daughter Jane Elder (Kristopher/Christa and Shawn/Tara), son-in-law David Horst (Ruth, Rachel/Mike and Renate/Nick), and many dear great grandchildren.
Ann will always be remembered for her positive attitude, courageous spirit and warm hugs that she was always happy to share. She was truly an inspiration to many.
There will be no service, the family will have a private gathering at a later date.
A special thanks to Mom's extended family at Fir Park Village who were always so incredibly kind to her. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a donation in memory of Ann to:

THE ROSE
Old age is often frowned upon
the rose has lost its splendor.
Her thorns remain
with aches and pain,
a sad refrain
and all in vain.
Old age demands surrender.
Yet if we free our minds to roam
through years we left behind us
without regret
and only glad
for what we had
in good and bad
then happiness will find us.
For old can turn to gold again,
relax, take time, enjoy it.
Dwell here and there
with time to spare
so much to share
of love and care.
Pain cannot destroy it.
Don't wish to be that age again
the world has been a-turning
old minds can't meet
inventions beat
tremendous speed
of word and deed
with ever faster learning.
A happy heart makes spirits rise
the future to endeavour
each day can bring
new songs to sing.
Encouraging
the rose to cling
her fragrance sweet as ever.
