December 28, 2020
It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Anne Cheryl Kraskin (Gelman) on December 28, 2020. Her time with us was cut short by cancer.
Anne will be lovingly remembered by her husband Joe Kraskin of 50 years. Anne will be deeply missed by her siblings, Dodie and her husband Cyril Teplinsky of Toronto, and her brother Sam and his wife Ellen (Lazear) in Ottawa. Anne was pre-deceased by her father Benjamin (Gelman), her mother Rebecca (Schecter), and her older sister Vivian, formerly married to Herb Taller.
Anne had a passion for reading and writing throughout her life. Her special talents were expressed over a 15-year period, tutoring children in several public schools in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. For each child she created a safe haven and customized learning approaches, enabling them to blossom.
Anne was very fond of her nephews and nieces, beloved Jamie (pre-deceased) and Barry, Dawn and Melanie, Natalie and Jessica. When they visited, she introduced them to magical botanical gardens and scenic coastal vistas. These sanctuaries stimulated the writing of poems, birthday and anniversary cards for family and friends. She never missed a date. Anne motivated all of us to pursue our ambitions through guidance and compassion.
As a nutritionist she instructed family and friends on healthy eating, how to listen to our body, and take care of it. Many of us changed our diets and lifestyles as a result. Anne was also the family historian. She researched the Gelman and Schecter family roots and meticulously organized this invaluable history for future generations.
The family expresses its heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Jenkin and the nursing staff at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. The family is grateful for the exceptional care and companionship provided by nurses Joan MacKinnon and Soni Manjinder from the VIHA Home and Community Care Service.
In addition, we thank Drs. Towers, Fukunaga, and King for providing the necessary services in conjunction with the VIHA Palliative Care and End of Life Care program.
