October 27, 1942 - October 3, 2022
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Andrew Ronald McAfee (Ron) at the age of 79 on October 3, 2022, after a brief fight with cancer.
Ron was born in Regina, Saskatchewan on October 27, 1942. After graduating high school early, he moved to Edmonton, Alberta in 1959 to attend U of A, where he completed a Bachelor of Education. It was in Alberta where Ron met Robbie in 1961 and they were married in 1964. He taught in Alberta for a couple of years before deciding upon a career change.
In 1967, Ron and his wife moved to Kingston, Ontario, where Ron attended Queen's University. Upon completion of his law degree, he and Robbie moved to Nanaimo, BC in 1970 and Ron practiced law until his retirement in 2012. Throughout his fulfilling career, he enjoyed helping all those he could.
In 1972, Ron and his wife were introduced to community theatre at the Nanaimo Theatre Group. They became lifetime members and Ron was very proud of all his accomplishments both on and off stage. He was involved in almost every aspect of the theatre including sound, lighting, set design, acting, directing and was even involved in zone and provincial festivals. Above all, he valued the many connections he made with members of the NTG over the years. Ron also enjoyed being involved in the Bathtub Society for a few years.
Ron and Robbie had two children who admired him greatly and they remained in Nanaimo, where they built their life together over the next few decades. Although he was not always a man of many words, he was a loving, protective and supportive dad. Unfortunately, tragedy struck in 2001, when their son Kelly passed away.
Ron enjoyed dining at Kelly's Kitchen Café, frequenting garage sales and watching reruns of his favourite shows and movies. He loved animals and music, often whistling along to songs. He had many collections of antiques, clocks, records, teddy bears, model cars and fire engines, just to name a few. He will be remembered for his intelligence, quiet strength, handy skills, sense of humour and his unbeatable musical trivia knowledge.
Ron is predeceased by his mother and father, Joyce and Andy McAfee, and his son Kelly. He is survived by his wife Robbie, daughter Paula Kuffler, son-in-law Jason (aka "Cheetah"), granddaughter Payton, sisters-in-law Janet Crapo, Margo Swanston and Carol Wynia (John) and nieces and nephews Lara Pocock (Bart), Robby Olson (Lyndsay), Sjon Wynia (Alicia), and Josh Wynia (Jen).
There will be an informal Celebration of Life held at the Bailey Studio on October 22, 2022 from 3pm to 5pm. If you would like to share any stories or memories of Ron prior to the service, please send to r_mcafee@shaw.ca.
Donations may be sent to the BC Cancer Foundation in lieu of flowers. The family would like to express a sincere thank you to the wonderful staff at NRGH and VIHA home care nursing staff.
