Alexander (Alec) Cooper Smith, P.Eng, 83, of Qualicum Beach, B.C. passed away peacefully, on November 11, 2017 at the Gardens.

Alec was born in Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland; the only child of Mr. & Mrs. Ernie Smith, on July 30, 1934.

In 1953 Alec arrived in Montreal, to start a long and rewarding civil-€structural engineering career. Alice soon joined him; they married and €had three sons. During his long career, Alec worked with Suncor in the €north, Bechtel in San Francisco, with projects in Saudi Arabia; and Bantrel in Calgary where he retired as a Sr. Engineer in 1999.

Alec was an avid golfer, having picked up the sport at the young age of 10-years old. Five hole-in-one's were the hallmark of his favourite sport to play. Locally, Alec was a member at Eaglecrest and Pheasant Glen, but also was a past member at Redwood Meadows in Calgary and the Edmonton Golf & Country Club.

He also enjoyed watching the Montreal Canadiens play hockey, and found great joy listening to his jazz, as well! Alec was also a member of the Parksville Probus Club.

Alec is fondly remembered by his life-long friends in Aberdeen, Scotland, Ian Sinclair and Dr. Raymond Hardy.

Many thanks go to the nursing staff on the third floor of the Gardens for their loving care of Alec in his final days.

Alec is survived by his two sons, Andrew and Douglas from Calgary, and four grandsons from Edmonton.

He was predeceased by his wife Alice, from Calgary; and his son Lindsay Smith, from Edmonton.

There will be no funeral services, at Alec's request.
