September 30, 1954 - September 25, 2022
The family of Alex Guy is mourning his sudden death from cardiac arrest on Sunday, September 25, 2022.
He passed peacefully while on holiday with a good friend in the wilderness of Northern BC, the region where he grew up and started his family.
With the North always in his blood, he settled in Lantzville on Vancouver Island in 1979 and became a true Islander with a love of the ocean, hiking, camping, boating, fishing, year-round gardening and all things coastal.
Together with his life partner, Gillian, Alex raised three children in Lantzville and built a thriving hardware wholesale business there. He set a standard among friends and colleagues for his business ethics, his support of employees and had a reputation for his creative and innovative entrepreneurial drive.
Alex spent his entire life caring for others, first as a big brother in a large family and then as a friend, husband, father and an involved community member who gave far more than he ever took. He was heavily involved with Haven Society Nanaimo, Hamperville Nanaimo, the Bethlehem Centre, St. Philips Anglican Church, Scouts Canada and spent countless hours coaching his children in softball and hockey.
Memories pouring in from the community consistently recall a man who was generous, compassionate, supportive, helpful and worked in many ways to lift up the lives of others. His family will always remember him as playful, highly imaginative and as the one who brought a magical way of being into the lives of children.
A surrogate grandfather to many, he was cherished by his six grandchildren, who were his pride and joy and the centre of his world.
He is survived by the love of his life and wife of almost 50 years, Gillian, as well as his three children (Laurie, Chris and Kelly), his sons-in-law (Chris and Jamie), his six grandchildren (Audrey, Emily, Isabelle, James, Anna and Aidan) as well as his large and loving family.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Haven Society Nanaimo or Bethlehem Centre.
A celebration of life will be held at 1pm on Friday, October 14 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church (6234 Spartan Road).
