Alan Gene Schickerowsky, on January 28th, we unexpectedly lost a legend at 70 years old. He was a beloved husband, adored father and a close friend to many.
Alan leaves behind his devoted wife of 37 years, five daughters as well as five son in-laws, and nine grandchildren. With five daughters, he was always the most handsome guy at the dinner table and most definitely "the Best Papa Ever!"
Originally from Mission, B.C. he grew up with his parents and four siblings with one being his twin brother, and many cousins. He had worked many jobs as per his grandfather's advice and in 1980 he moved to the island and continued to work.
Al loved to tell stories and was known for being kind, welcoming and genuinely interested in getting to know people. He was always the life of the party and a huge softie, with a smile that could light up a room. He was always calling his friends and family just to check in.
This great man loved camping, reading ,classic cars and being part of the community especially his extensive work with the Knights of Columbus. He would make up songs and sing to his kids and grandkids particularly when tired and trying to stay awake while driving.
Al made a lasting impression on those he met and with his passing we are realizing how many lives he has impacted.
We have been told "The loss and emptiness we feel when we lose someone we love are the pieces of ourselves we gave to them in life. The memories we cherish are the pieces of them we were given in return. These pieces will be how we find each other in the next life."
Due to COVID there will be no formal service at this time but a virtual celebration will be held in the near future.
