Victoria Airport Authority is warning users of a popular recreation path about the presence of dangerous wildlife.

A yellow-coloured warning sign with words ‘caution – bear in area’ currently stands in at least one spot along the Flight Path, a 9.3 km bike-and-walking trail around the airport.

Rod Hunchak, director of business development and community relations, said the sign is one of several alerting the public. Staff put up the signs out of what Hunchak called was an abundance of caution after an airport employee had noticed a black bear in the area Saturday (May 29) around 1:40 p.m. No additional details about the bear are available.

Hunchak said both Sidney/North Saanich RCMP and B.C. Conservation Officer Service received calls about the sighting, which happened in a wooded area near the Saanich Peninsula Presbyterian Church.
