A fire hydrant struck by a vehicle early Friday morning sent water gushing into the air on Fitzgerald Avenue in Courtenay.
Courtenay firefighters were called to the 1300-block of Fitzgerald Avenue after a vehicle hit the hydrant which shot water for about 45 minutes. The high-pressure stream sent water in the air like a fountain and crews closed the road as water poured onto nearby streets.
The City of Courtenay noted city crews are on site dealing with the issue and recommend any residents in the area who are experiencing turbid water to run their cold water taps for 15 to 20 minutes in order to clear the water.
Comox Valley RCMP were on scene looking at a white vehicle left behind which had extensive damage. The driver could not be located.
