Nanaimo firefighters were busy at the start of the Family Day long weekend after being called to a house fire in the Buttertubs Marsh area.

Firefighters responded to an alarm in the 1900 block of Valley Oak Drive where fire had broken out in a home shortly after 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 18.

“It was a double-wide mobile home and it had flames coming through the attic,” said Stu Kenning, Nanaimo Fire Rescue assistant chief of operations.

He said crews and apparatus from Nanaimo’s four fire stations responded to the blaze and managed to contain the fire to the attic space. Extensive damage was done to the attic and roof of the home.

Kenning said Nanaimo Fire Rescue’s loss prevention officers would be investigating the cause of the fire. He said no one was injured, but two residents were displaced. The occupants have insurance.
